The Seattle Asian Art Museum opened its doors in 1933 as the original home of the Seattle Art Museum. The art moderne structure located in Volunteer Park, designed by Seattle architect Carl Gould, became the official site of the Seattle Asian Art Museum in 1994.
The Asian collections of over 7,000 objects contain significant holdings in nearly all areas. The Japanese collection is considered one of the top five in the U.S. and among the most distinguished outside of Japan. The extensive holdings include significant examples of ink painting, calligraphy, Buddhist sculpture, metalwork and folk textiles.
The Chinese collection spans the Neolithic period through the 19th century and includes tomb figures, ceramics, ritual bronzes, sculpture, painting, lacquers, textiles, jade carvings, snuff bottles and over 350 Chinese puppets. The museum’s large-scale Chinese Buddhist sculpture is particularly noteworthy.
The Korean collection contains folding screens, celadons and early stoneware ceramics.
The South and Southeast Asian collection includes Buddhist and Hindu sculpture in stone and bronze, painting, and decorative arts, as well as a premiere collection of early Thai ceramics.
